I rewatched The Water Diviner because i remembered it hit hard as a kid and wanted to see if it still held up. It was ok, it was not as thematically rich as it could have been, camera work was espesially shit (quick cuts annoy me the most, but i will always have a bias against digital. Fight Club is the only exception.) I really like the quips from Russle Crow's character, but i hate the quipping remarks and banter between the Turkish and British Officers and other military men, it feels artifically constructed and not at all something two men in their guarded positions against eachother trying to recover the thousands of bodies of soldiers from their respective sides would say to eachother. It feels very hollywood esque type of banter that you see in oppenheimer and other big military block busters, that prevents it from reaching levels of quality that movies like Leathal Weapon 2, Silence of the Lambs, and Iron Cross do. The background characters felt very flat as well, despite the ammount of time allocated to them, except for Major Hasan and Sgt. Jamal, but Hasan becomes just a "mentor/guide" to Connor within the last quater of the movie, which irriates me because he was one of the few better written characters there. And the cricket bat scene, man, that was just cheap. 1 set up for the bat, and then a pay off, for the bat where Connor saves Hasan from the enemies about to excecute him by using his magic powers of british sport to fell all of them, despite them haveing guns.
The movie also felt thematically bare-bones. None of the themes set up like Suicide, Grief, Loss of Family/Children, Sacrifice, patriotism/Misguided Patriotism, Nationalist Ideals, and Interventionalism and War/Invading Other Countries, Rejection/Rediscovery of God, Religion, Forgiveness, Culture and Rejection of Culture, none of these MANY themes which are all set up within the movie, are touched upon more than twice and the majority are not given a conclusion to, which makes the movie feel very bare bones. The setup is really rich, with the goodnight reading ritual to the missing boys, the wife's suicide and greif, Connar working physically to forgte grief, the sandstorm scene, the church burial scene, all were really good and rich for a first act and setting a tone, but the tone changed after the first act and lost it's sprrowful/dark vibe. Also Montages were over used.
Objectivly it's a pretty good movie. I really like the end scene with Connor finding his Son and asking for/& forgiving his son, and the end scene of his return to the Hotel and Ayshe's profression of love to him through 2 pounds of sugar in his coffee, i liked those scenes.
(on some research, i found that there's a 1980s's version of the story called Gallipoli starring Mel Gibson which is great because i fucking adore Mel Gibson and enjoy most of the movies he makes (i've only seen two lol) he's a phenomenal actor and 1980s movies are ALWAYS so much better with social background texture, banter, and themes, and even if they arent there's still that rich 16/35 mm film frames. Gallipoli is next on my watch list.
